Framing a Kindle

Robbie’s Unique Digital Artwork Project

At Frame Today, we see our fair share of unique and challenging framing requests. But every so often, a project comes along that truly pushes the boundaries of creativity and craftsmanship. For Robbie, our Queensland stores manager, that project was personal. His mission? To custom frame a Kindle eReader so it could function as a dynamic digital art display, allowing him to update the artwork anytime and amaze guests with a simple tap.

“I love showing people my ‘new artwork’,” Robbie says with a grin. “Then it changes right before their eyes!”

This one-of-a-kind project blends modern technology with traditional picture framing techniques, creating a framed masterpiece that evolves endlessly.

The Vision: Framing a Kindle as a Digital Artwork

The idea began when Robbie wanted a way to display rotating black-and-white artworks in his home without the limitations of static prints. He imagined a framed Kindle hanging on the wall, seamlessly integrated into his decor, but with the ability to refresh its content on demand.

Unlike a tablet or monitor, the Kindle’s e-ink display was perfect for this purpose. Its matte finish closely resembles paper, and it uses very little power, making it ideal for long-term display.

The challenge? Designing a custom frame that could:

  • House the Kindle securely
  • Provide access to charging without visible cables
  • Incorporate a wake mechanism to refresh the screen
  • Complement the device with aesthetic matting and moulding choices

This was no ordinary job - it was a complex, multi-layered framing project.

The Framing Process: Innovation Meets Craftsmanship

Robbie approached the project the same way he would any intricate memorabilia framing job, but with a high-tech twist. Here’s how he made it work:

  1. Selecting the frame and matboards
He chose a sleek, modern moulding with a deep rebate to accommodate the Kindle’s depth. For the matting, he used crisp white and charcoal black boards to echo the Kindle’s minimalist design and enhance the monochrome artwork displayed on-screen.
  2. Custom mounting for functionality
A bespoke cradle was created within the frame to hold the Kindle snugly yet allow easy removal if needed. Strategic cut-outs in the backing board provided access to the charging port.
  3. Concealed charging setup
To avoid unsightly cords, Robbie designed a hidden channel within the frame to route a slim USB cable to a nearby power source. This ensures the Kindle stays charged without interrupting the clean, gallery-like appearance.

As the Kindle’s e-ink display does not suffer from glare and is designed to be interacted with, Robbie chose not to use glass over the front of the frame. This allows easy access to the device’s touch-screen.

The Result: A Living Piece of Wall Art

The finished piece is stunning in its simplicity. At first glance, it looks like a beautifully framed black-and-white print. But as Robbie demonstrates the hidden functionality, it becomes clear this is no ordinary artwork.

By loading the Kindle with a collection of high-resolution digital artworks, Robbie can showcase anything from classic sketches to contemporary digital designs. The e-ink display means each image has a timeless, paper-like quality.

And thanks to the built-in charging and wake mechanism, the framed Kindle can continue displaying and updating artworks effortlessly for years to come.
