Custom Float Framing for an Original Bali Canvas

Case Study

At Frame Today Tuggerah, we’re always up for a creative challenge - especially when it’s to help commemorate a major life milestone. In this story, we showcase a one-of-a-kind custom stretched canvas framing job that celebrates freedom, self-expression, and the power of art to mark life’s next chapter.

From Farm Life to a Sea Change

Our client, Tony, had just wrapped up a big transition. After decades on the land as a cattle farmer, he sold his property to his neighbours and embraced a new lifestyle filled with travel and reinvention.

During a recent trip to Bali, Tony discovered a striking original canvas artwork that deeply resonated with him - an evocative portrait of a Woman with a Wilderness Within. Inspired and energised, he returned home with the artwork in hand and a clear vision for how it should be framed.

A Vision in White: Framing Without Limits

Tony visited us at Frame Today Tuggerah with a specific design in mind:

  • A wide white border,
  • A crisp white frame, and
  • A deep, exaggerated float frame shadow gap.

Most canvas float frames feature a subtle 5mm space between the canvas edge and the frame. But Tony wanted to make a bolder statement. We worked with him to create an oversized 30mm shadow gap, dramatically enhancing the visual space around the artwork and giving it room to breathe.

To achieve this, we had to modify our usual mounting methods. The canvas was gallery-wrapped around the stretcher bar edges, making every angle visible and adding to the immersive, sculptural effect. This approach required precise craftsmanship and careful anchoring so the piece would sit securely and beautifully inside the frame.

Building a Statement Frame

As the float frame took shape, we encountered another design consideration: with the extra-wide float space, the front edge of the outer frame felt too slim to hold its own. Rather than compromise, we decided to frame the frame - surrounding the float frame with a second, more substantial outer frame that created a striking double-frame effect.

The result? A stunning, architectural statement frame that’s both minimal and powerful. With its white-on-white palette and dramatic proportions, the piece is as bold as the Wild Woman it houses.

A Creative Collaboration

We love when customers come to us with big ideas. Tony’s vision pushed us beyond the ordinary, and the result is a piece of framed artwork that reflects his new life, his bold spirit, and his appreciation for design.

"Limited only by one’s imagination, it was a challenge and a pleasure to frame this piece so uniquely to match our customer’s aesthetic."

It’s safe to say that no two framing jobs are ever the same at Frame Today, especially when a client knows exactly what they want and trusts us to bring it to life.

So…Where will She go?

Now that the frame is finished and looking spectacular, Tony faces a new challenge: deciding where to display his Woman with a Wilderness Within in his freshly styled home. And while he’s at it, there’s another big post-retirement question on the table; should he take up golf?

Whatever he chooses, one thing’s certain - this wild canvas will be a conversation starter for years to come.
