The Challenge of Preserving Fragile Historical Photo Cards
The collection featured original photographs of members of the Brisbane Volunteer Rifles, part of the Pre‑Federation Defence Force active in Queensland before Australia’s Federation in 1901. These rare photo cards, aged over a century, are delicate and prone to damage from light, moisture, and physical contact.
Our goal was twofold:
✅ Protect the collection from environmental hazards while allowing it to be admired daily.
✅ Design a frame that enhances the historic aesthetic without overshadowing the photos themselves.
The Framing Process Where Craftsmanship Meets Conservation
1. Choosing the Right Frame
The collector selected a frame from the Andover collection, a European-manufactured range renowned for its fine hand-brushed foil finish. The “Aged Bronze” profile was the perfect choice, blending classic tones of antique bronze and brown for a timeless look. Its clean, boxed profile added a touch of contemporary design, ideal for a piece bridging past and present.
The Andover collection’s credentials made it even more special:

This choice ensured the frame would complement the collection’s historic significance while fitting seamlessly into a modern home or gallery setting.
2. Museum-Quality Materials
To protect these priceless artefacts, our Mittagong framers used Tru Vue UltraVue® glass, offering:
- 70% UV protection to prevent fading.
- Exceptional clarity and minimal reflection for an unobstructed view.
- Anti-static properties ideal for delicate historical items.
A clay-coloured matboard, weighted at the bottom, added visual balance and sophistication. Its earthy tone harmonised beautifully with the sepia tones of the original photographs.
3. Protective Techniques
Because the photo cards are original, spacers were carefully installed between the matboard and the glass. This critical detail prevents the cards from coming into direct contact with the glass, reducing the risk of condensation damage and ensuring the delicate surfaces remain protected.
Each photo card was meticulously mounted using conservation-grade framing methods, so they’re fully supported but can be safely removed in the future if needed.
