At Frame Today, we love when a piece of framing work goes beyond décor and steps into living history. That’s exactly what happened when a customer brought us this vintage gig poster for the band Flowers - who would later become the internationally famous Icehouse.
This isn’t just any poster. It’s a time capsule from an era when Australian pub rock was exploding, and some of the country’s biggest bands were still earning their stripes. On the lineup that night? Flowers, INXS, and Cold Chisel - three names that would go on to define a generation of Aussie music. For fans of Australian rock memorabilia, few pieces are as iconic as a Flowers (Icehouse) poster from the days when INXS and Cold Chisel shared the stage.
And the ticket price? Just $4 for Sydney Uni students, $5 for everyone else. Boomers really did know how to party - a whole night of live music legends for less than the cost of a coffee today!
A Family Connection
What makes this piece even more special is its personal story. The poster’s owner is the sister of one of the Flowers band members, which makes this not just a collector’s item, but a cherished family keepsake. While the bright neon green poster had survived the years with a few creases and worn edges, it was time to give it the protection and presentation it deserved.
Our Framing Approach
When framing rare and irreplaceable music memorabilia like this, our goal is twofold: preservation and presentation.
Here’s how we brought the poster to life:
- Frame: A Moda Black frame, crafted in Italy, was chosen for its timeless and stylish look. The deep black profile allowed the electric green of the poster to take centre stage.
- Matboard: We used a Midnight Black matboard with a crisp bevelled cut, giving a sharp definition around the poster while enhancing its bold graphic design.
- Mounting: The poster was carefully floated on Nu Core 5mm foamboard, ensuring it sits flat while preserving the texture of the original paper - folds and all.
- Glass: Finally, we fitted Tru Vue Conservation Clear glass, which provides 99% UV protection to prevent fading while keeping the vibrant colours intact for the future.
The result is a conservation-quality frame that protects the poster from further damage while letting its history and personality shine through.
Rock ’n’ Roll, Framed Forever
This project is a perfect example of vintage concert poster framing where the goal is both preservation and presentation. But it wasn’t just about framing a poster – it was about framing a story. A story of Aussie music in its rawest days, of a family connection to one of our most iconic bands, and of nights when the best live acts in the country played for just a few bucks.
Now safely preserved, this poster can be enjoyed and celebrated for generations to come – just like the music it represents. 🎶
