Custom Memorabilia & Object Framing

Heirloom Tools Float Mounted with Ultra Vue Crystal Clear Glass

“When you frame an heirloom, you’re not just preserving an object - you’re protecting a family story.”

In this feature from our Sydney custom framing team at Alexandria, we showcase how a treasured set of old rusty tools belonging to our customer’s grandfather, was transformed into a striking wall frame using conservation memorabilia framing, floating mount techniques, stacked frames, and UltraVue™ crystal clear glass that virtually eliminates reflections.

Rusty old tools ready for framing

Memorabilia Framing That Preserves Grandfather’s Tools

These well-used tools carry marks of a working life; aged surface, wear, and character that tell their own story. The brief was clear: celebrate the authenticity of the metal and patina while protecting the matboard and frame from future staining or transfer. Custom object memorabilia framing was the perfect answer; a museum-minded approach that balances aesthetics with preservation.

Conservation Object Framing to Manage Age, Rust & Fragility

Items with a rust patina demand specialised care. Metals can shed particles or transfer colour over time, and uneven shapes make secure mounting a challenge. Our goal was to:

  • Preserve the tools in their current condition (no harsh cleaning that might erase history).
  • Prevent contact transfer so the rust didn’t stain the matboard.
  • Mount reversibly, so the design could be updated or the items removed without damage.
  • Create a harmonious layout that feels curated, not crowded.

Floating Mounting on a Cream Matboard

Carolyn, our Alexandria store manager, led the project.

Barrier Layer to Protect the Matboard

To maintain the warm, neutral look of a cream matboard without risking stains, Carolyn lined the mat with barrier paper. This extra layer shielded the matboard from the tools’ rust and patina during mounting and layout, and importantly, was easy to remove afterwards so the finished work remains unstained.

Reversible Fastening Using Nylon Line

For a non-invasive, reversible mount, Carolyn used a stitching technique with the barrier paper protecting the matboard while stitching it. This allows the tools to float visually above the mat, creating depth while keeping the objects securely in position. The method avoids adhesives directly on the metal, reducing the risk of staining, residue, or long-term reactions.

Why floating works for memorabilia: It gives dimension, works with irregular shapes, and keeps focus on the object’s form; perfect for tools, medals, sporting items, and other 3-dimensional mementos.

Balanced Composition

With pieces ranging from pliers to awls and chisels, the array called for a considered composition. The layout balances vertical and horizontal elements, clusters similar forms without crowding, and leaves breathing space so the eye can study each tool. The result is both orderly and expressive - like a visual inventory of a craftsperson’s life.

Stacked Frames from the Moda Italian Classic Range

To emphasise presence and depth, we selected two stacked frames from the Moda Italian Classic range. Stacking creates a deep shadow‑box style profile:

  • Depth: Room for dimensional objects and floating techniques.
  • Elegance: The refined, dark timber tones complement the warm cream matboard and the rich metal patina.
  • Focus: A crisp inner profile draws the eye to the objects, while the deep box frame grounds the piece on the wall.

This pairing delivers a timeless, gallery-level presentation that suits both contemporary and classic interiors.

Ultra Vue Anti‑Reflective Glass for Clarity & UV Protection

For glazing, we specified UltraVue™ anti‑reflective glass. This premium glass significantly reduces reflections, improves clarity, and offers 70% UV protection to help slow fading and discolouration over time. In practice, that means:

  • Exceptional clarity: You see the objects, not the glare.
  • Truer colours: The cream matboard and tools appear clean and neutral.
  • Protection: Helps guard against UV-related fading of all elements.

The right UV glass is a smart upgrade for memorabilia framing and shadow box framing, especially when your piece will hang in spaces with variable light.

The Framed Heirloom

Old tools framed

What began as a loose assortment of aged tools is now a compelling heirloom display; clean, dimensional, and deeply personal. The floating mount gives the objects presence; the stacked Moda Italian Classic frames add stature; and the Tru Vue UltraVue glass ensures the piece is enjoyed without distraction. Most of all, the framing respects the story; the work, skill, and craft these tools represent.
