Three Simple Ways to Arrange Wall Frames

Richard Tarrant - Wednesday, November 25, 2020 | Comments (0)

Great wall art will transform an otherwise plain space of your home into a visually appealing section. However, knowing exactly how to make the décor work can be a difficult task.

With many options up for consideration, picking the right combination of images to hang can fill even the best amateur decorator with anxiety. To help you overcome this, we have compiled three simple tips below to help you take the fear out of coordinating your wall frames.

1. Arrange by theme

Choosing a theme based on your artwork is one of the simplest ways to arrange picture frames on a wall. This means that images with similar content are grouped together to provide a consistent visual understanding of what the space is about.

Most people look to frame images that showcase their interests or memorable moments; hence a theme will naturally form without much forethought. This can be outdoor landscapes, personal portraits, or family picture arrangements. Once you find a theme, stick to it and avoid the temptation to add in random images.

But what if you are struggling to find a theme?

If you have a key piece of art that stands out, hang this up first and build all others around this. Large pieces work best as a centrepiece and should be hung at eye level. A focal piece is also a great alternative if you are looking to hang mismatched picture frames or anything without a consistent theme or similarities.

2. Arrange by shape

Picking a shape will help guide you when hanging artwork together. The most common themes to work with are squares, triangles, or pinwheels. Start with a vision of the shape you would like to work with, then measure out the space available to ensure that you can comfortably fit your frames in place. When arranging frames by shape, it is helpful to start from the bottom and work your way up.

For a more structured grouping, work in a symmetrical grid using frames with matching styles and sizing. This results in a more formal look that is ideal for older rooms. If you’re looking to hang different sized picture frames, groupings incorporating pictures of different sizes can give the space a more modern feel.

3. Arrange by colour

If you have got the eye for it, arranging images by colour palette can be an extremely useful method. While it might seem like a simple rule for grouping wall frames together, if done incorrectly it can throw out the look of the space.

Firstly, consider the overall style of the room and pick colours that works with the existing theme. For example – modern rooms will be best complemented by neutral coloured frames in black and white that don’t detract from the minimalist feel.

To create a more striking look, you may like to try complimenting bright or even opposing primary colours such as blue and green. Finally, whatever colour scheme you settle on, don’t spend too much time focused on matching your walls to your frames.

More tips for matching

1. Avoid filling a wall space that is too small or already cluttered.

2. Lay out your frames on the floor prior to hanging them up. This will ensure you get a good impression of the chosen layout beforehand. This can all be done prior to selecting frames.

3. To avoid making too many nail holes, try tracing around your frames on paper and arrange them on the wall so you can see the layout at the right height.

4. Measure space to make sure that your pictures and artwork will fit. Measure a height and width of your shape/layout and mark off where you want your pictures to start and end on the wall.

5. Try not to space pictures too far apart or too close together. A good balance to aim for 5-10cm between each frame.

For added inspiration, you can always gather additional creativity from sites such as Pinterest and Instagram.

Can You Fix Broken Picture Frames?

Richard Tarrant - Wednesday, November 25, 2020 | Comments (0)

“I have a frame I purchased somewhere else that has broken. Can you fix it?”

This is one of the most frequently asked questions we get in store and via our website. While the short answer is “Yes, we can”, the reality of repairing frames can be far more complicated than that.

Common wear-and-tear is expected over time with even the most expensive frames, but damage for any reason can be a costly exercise for a homeowner. Most broken picture frames can usually be traced back to either a poor choice of materials or faults in the manufacturing process. The most common framing failures we see from other framers and ready-made frames are broken hangers, separated corners and broken glass due to excess movement because the glass wasn’t cut to a precise size when fitted-up.

Unfortunately, if an accident occurs and inferior materials were used, there is less strength in the frame, and this can even lead to damaged artwork. Luckily, this does not have to mean the end of its hanging days and picture frames can be fixed. However, what stops them from inevitably breaking again? Finding someone that knows how to fix a broken picture frame is a band aid answer but can never fully substitute a long-lasting solution.

If the frame is barely stable while hanging it might be time to look at other possibilities available for preserving your artwork. Consider this - is it worth wasting the money replacing frames, when you can spend on a good quality option in the beginning and save the hassle down the track.

The first step is investing in a good quality product. Most retail and homewares store stock cheap photo frames built from plastic and other inferior materials. By cutting corners , low-cost frames can be produced at a fraction of the price and sold as everyday items.

Unfortunately, it can be hard to differentiate between value at a store without some help. When purchasing frames online, it can be even harder knowing what to look for before deciding on a choice.

A great quality picture frame should be preferably constructed from wood . Not only does this last longer, but you can also rest assured it will look better than a low-cost option. High cost does not always equal high quality. But cheaply framing a valuable piece is almost the same as adding budget rims on a sports car or wearing cheap shoes with a beautiful dinner dress. They just do not go together! And, with the proper hanging in place, there’s less chance of it falling off the hooks or damaging your walls in the middle of the night. So yes, while frame repair is possible, inferior frames are always more likely to break again. They can also be very difficult to repair due to the risk of further damage.

Frame Today uses top-of-the-line onsite framing technology to ensure the highest standard of workmanship in all our frames, especially at the cutting and joining stages.

How to Choose the Right Picture Frame Size

Richard Tarrant - Monday, November 16, 2020 | Comments (0)

A high-quality picture frame will help enhance and protect your artwork or photo for years. But the process of choosing the right frame size can be a bit of a challenge. If you are looking for help on selecting frames for a picture, poster, or print, read our simple guide below to set you on the right track.

Measure the dimensions

Measuring your artwork

Measure the length and width and depth of the artwork if it is a three-dimensional object. These dimensions are especially important if you are providing sizing to the framer. Keep in mind that the picture edges will be slightly covered. Also pay attention to differences between inches and millimetres to avoid any confusion in picking out your choices. At Frame Today we work to the millimetres, allowing us to deliver the precision you’d demand but still cater for imperial size ready-made photo frames.

Consider the space available

Measuring your wall before selecting a frame size

While measuring the artwork, take some time to also measure the size of the space on the wall you are looking to hang it on. Try to avoid picking small spaces as it can easily start to look cluttered. You should aim to leave an even amount of space around the picture when hung up. It is a lot easier to pick a frame based on the space available than to find a blank wall to fit the frame afterwards.

Choose the frame layout

Select the layout of your framing

Whether you are looking for single picture or collage-style arrangement, the artwork-type should dictate the picture frame you choose. For example, a larger sized photo is best complimented by a wider frame with matboard or mount added to create correct proportions and provide the structural strength to support the weight of the artwork or photo, and glass. Similarly, a less detailed scene works best within a thicker frame to act as a buffer to the image.

Although most framing jobs require custom sizes that fit the artwork, style, hanging location and personal taste, there are some common ready-made picture frame sizes we work with including:

  • A4 (210 x 297 mm)
  • 11 x 14 inch
  • 12 x 16 inch
  • 10 x 20 inch
  • A3 (297 x 420 mm)
  • 16 x 20 inch
  • A2 (420 x 594 mm)
  • 20 x 24 inch
  • 20 x 30 inch
  • A1 (594 x 840 mm)
  • POSTER- SML (600 x 900 mm)
  • POSTER- LGE (700 x 1000 mm)

Choose matting

Select a mat board mount from a huge range of colours

Your choice of picture matting will factor into the frame size you choose. The matting serves two important purposes. Firstly, it creates the space to make your artwork or photo “pop”, while making the artwork stand out and draw your gaze. Secondly, it separates the artwork or photo from the glass which allows moisture to escape within humid environments, as is the case here in Australia. The general rule for a larger artwork or photo is to select a wider mat, however this depends on the size of the frame you select. If you select a wider frame, adding a mat will help to create the space around your artwork or photo that will draw the viewers’ attention.

Choose frame

Select a frame from a large range of quality wooden picture frames

When picking out a frame, look for something sturdy that can support the weight of the artwork and glass and is proportional to the size of your artwork. The best picture framing materials for value are wooden frames which come in a variety of colours, sizes and styles to suit a wider range of tastes.

To maintain our commitment to quality, plastic and metal frames are not used at Frame Today because they are inferior in quality and will degrade much quicker. Instead we focus on natural timbers that are both long-lasting and more aesthetically appealing.

Need Same Day Framing? We've Got You Covered

Richard Tarrant - Wednesday, November 04, 2020 | Comments (0)

Do you have an old family photo lying around that you have been looking to turn into something special? Perhaps a family member recently graduated with a plaque that could do with a little shine?

If you want longevity and durability, custom framing is the answer to preserving your mementos.

How Long Does Custom Framing Take?

While there is no definitive answer, custom framing can usually take anywhere from 1-3 weeks to turnaround a finished product. The time involved usually comes down to the techniques and materials required to complete the work, the type of item being framed or complexity of job, and the quantity involved.

So, as our name suggests, we introduced a same day picture framing service available to customers at all Frame Today stores. We aim to elevate the level of service you can experience when looking to frame life’s priceless memories while offering quality workmanship at the best prices.

How It Works

Most framers will usually send orders off to an off-site workshop to be framed. This means that there is usually a delay in the turnaround time, a lack of clarity surrounding when you can expect the order to be completed and a risk of loss or damage.

All Frame Today stores have an on-site workshop that allows us to work on your order locally and ensure the highest form of customer service. Each workshop uses the latest European framing machines and computerised cutters designed for all types of work. This technology ensures the highest quality, speed and precision.

Our unique Same Day Framing service means you can drop your project off in the morning, choose from the in-store range of our pre-made frames or same day sample board, and pick up later in the afternoon or evening* ready to hang.

We take orders on a first-come-first-serve basis so once the day is booked, we can no longer offer the same day turnaround for the rest of that day but we can usually have it ready the following day. Complicated jobs may require more time when crafting the perfect framing job so we may not be able to provide same day framing in some instances. Generally, we can frame almost anything including poster prints, photographs and memorabilia.

Same Day Frames Collection

We stock a wide selection of high-quality, frames as part of our Same Day Frames Everyday range. These frames are available in a number of sizes, colours and style, which we tailor fit to your work.

Pick from a choice of frames, finishes and framing glass to complete the look. By offering this speciality instore, it is now quicker and easier to preserve those priceless moments. If you are not sure which option to choose, our specialist team can help you match an option that best works for your project.

Our same day framing service starts from $99 for an A4 size Tailored Everyday frame.

Looking for a gift?

As we move into the holiday season, same day framing could be the perfect last-minute gift for your loved ones. If you want it framed, get the job done right and take advantage of our fast, high-quality service trusted for over 15 years.
